We are sharing our recent interview with Enigma, a poet from Sydney.
Pro Media Mag : First of all please introduce yourself to our readers?
Enigma: Let me start by thanking you for having me, I really appreciate it. My name is Chris. I go by the pen name of Enigma. I am a poet from the south-west of Sydney. I write short form and long form poetry and prose.
Pro Media Mag : Who or what inspired you to get into writing poetry?
Enigma : Writing has always been a form of therepy for me. I had a lot of shit going on when I was a teenager. I hated speaking about it, so I would just sit alone and write until I cleared my mind. I started writing poetry a few months ago. I love short but powerful pieces of writing. Poetry ticks that box.
Pro Media Mag : What kind of effect your past has on your poetry?
Enigma : My past has a huge effect on my poetry. I feel like a lot of poets are writing about sunshine and rainbows. While it’s nice to read, it isn’t reality. Life is tough. I feel like my poetry reflects the life I’ve had, which at times, has been very tough.
A lot of people are going through, or have gone through situations like I have. I write poetry for those people.
Pro Media Mag : Tell us about your upcoming debut book, is it based on your personal feelings and experiences?
Enigma : Soulwords is dedicated to the women in my life. My mother, my grandmother, my wife and my daughters. I was raised by strong women and now I have two daughters of my own. This book is me, talking to all women from all different walks of life.
Pro Media Mag : What kind of response you have received so far?
Enigma : The response I’ve received so far has been incredible. I started posting my poetry on Instagram in June this year and I have just passed five and a half thousand followers. The love I’m getting is incredible.
It all feels surreal to me. I receive messages everyday from people thanking me for helping them. Words are powerful and I’m just glad my words are helping them through tough stages of their life.
Pro Media Mag : What’s the best part of being a poet?
Enigma : When I write, I’m putting my own thoughts and feelings into words. The fact that people relate to my thoughts is an amazing feeling.
Pro Media Mag : Have you set some goals to achieve?
Enigma : I just want to keep growing, as a person and as a writer. I really wanted to publish a book and in December, I’ll tick that goal. After that, who knows. Maybe a second book.
